2020 Subaru Impreza | Price, Features and Performance
November 08 2019,
Since its launch nearly three decades ago, the Subaru Impreza has established itself as a leading player in the small-size, high-value market.
Available in 4-door sedan and 5-door hatchback versions, it is now into its fifth generation and has a new refresh becoming available for 2020. Find out which new and existing features make the most impact with our 2020 Subaru Impreza review.
Wider EyeSight Availability
As with other models in the Subaru lineup, the 2020 Impreza will see the Subaru EyeSight active safety system introduced across all trim levels except the base, when previously it was an optional extra on higher trims only.
The suite contains several valuable safety and driver assistance features, including:
- Pre-collision throttle management.
- Automatic emergency braking system to avoid or reduce frontal impacts.
- Adaptive cruise control optimized for traffic movement.
- Lane-keeping assistance and lane departure warnings.
The EyeSight package is backed up by the Subaru Global Platform construction, which promises to safely absorb 40% more energy in a collision. There's also a full range of standard safety equipment including front, side and rear airbags, an energy absorbing steering column, and whiplash-reducing front seat designs.
Starlink Package
A further feature new to the Impreza is the Starlink package of connected services, allowing convenient control of engine ignition, door locking, and several other functions remotely via smartphone.
The system also features automatic collision detection with remote incident notification, along with enhanced roadside assistance features. As with EyeSight, Starlink is a standard feature in all trims except the lowest base level.
Engine and Performance
The underlying mechanics of the 2020 Impreza remain largely unchanged from the 2019 model. Both the four-door and five-door base trims feature a 2.0L, 4-cylinder Subaru Boxer engine with direct injection, producing 152 horsepower at 6,000rpm and 145 lb-ft of torque at 4,000rpm.
The power is funneled through a 5-speed manual transmission as standard or optional continuously variable transmission with Lineartronic stepping to emulate an 8-speed automatic gearbox. As usual with Subaru, all-wheel drive is standard across the entire Impreza range.
Fuel economy is good, with the sedan offering 10L / 100km for city driving and 7.5L / 100km on the highway. The hatchback is slightly thirstier, at 10.1L / 100km city and 7.7L / 100km highway.
Pricing
Impressively, the starting price for the base-level Convenience 5MT sedan model stays the same as last year, and is still just under the $20k mark at $19,995. Considering the extra features and developments, the price freeze is welcome. It also represents the least expensive way in the Canadian market of driving a new all-wheel drive car.
Higher trim levels will see modest price increases for the new refreshes, with the most expensive Sport-Tech CVT Eyesight five-door now weighing in at $31,695.
To sum up, the latest release of the Impreza provides a lot of car for an attractively low price, and at both ends of the trim level range. To try out the 2020 Subaru Impreza in Toronto, please book a test drive online, call us, or visit our office at 620 Kipling Ave.
