2020 Subaru Forester vs 2020 Ford Escape
April 23 2020,
There's no shortage of small SUVs on the market, and when you look at the format's advantages it's not hard to see why. Combining comfort, safety, and convenience in one attractive package, compact sport utility vehicles tick all the right boxes for modern family drivers.
The 2020 Subaru Forester is a longstanding leader in the segment, but how does it compare to one of its best-known competitors, the Ford Escape?
Performance and Fuel Economy
The two SUVs have very different engine types, although the end-result performance is similar. The Forester is based around a 2.5L gasoline engine providing 182 horsepower and 176lb-ft of torque.
The Ford's 1.5L turbo option produces slightly more torque at 190lb-ft, but has a fractionally lower power output at 181 horsepower. Both cars offer automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as standard.
In reality, both cars offer very similar performance in their standard configurations. However, the different engine types produce different fuel economy ratings, with the Forester taking a significant edge.
Both SUVs manage 9L / 100km in the city, although on the highway the Subaru's 7.1 is comfortably ahead of the Ford's 7.6. While the difference in economy isn't dramatic at first glance, if you regularly drive longer distances on the highway, the fuel savings will soon mount up. And what's more, the Forester's fuel tank can hold 63L compared to the Escape's 56L, making longer journeys more convenient with fewer stops.
Off-Road Performance
A vital aspect of SUVs is their off-road ability. This isn't just important for people who love to adventure in the wilderness, but is also a good measure of a vehicle's robustness and ability to cope with poor conditions.
The 2020 Forester is hard to beat in this area, with its high ground clearance, X-Mode driving setting, and Hill Descent control. Couple these features with double wishbone suspension at both front and rear, and the Subaru drives safely and confidently whatever the weather.
Cargo Space
On overall cargo space the Subaru has a definite advantage. At maximum, the Forester sports 2,155L of space compared to the Ford's 1,852L, making it ideal for transporting larger larger loads in one trip.
However; the Ford has the edge when it comes to heavy towing capacity, able to haul around 25% more than the Forester at 907kg.
Interior Space
With it's slightly larger frame, the Ford has a little extra space for rear seat passengers than the Subaru. In the front seat, the difference is noticeably reversed, with the Subaru offering more headroom and legroom.
The Subaru's configuration and layout is probably more suited to families than to carrying a full five adults at all times, which isn't surprising as this is firmly the market the car is aimed at.
Overall, both cars are great examples of the power, flexibility, and comfort of the small SUV format. However, unless you have a pressing need for a high towing capacity, the 2020 Subaru Forester makes a more compelling choice thanks to its fuel economy, cargo space, and all-round comfort level.
