2020 Subaru Crosstrek | Price, Features and Performance
November 01 2019,
Subaru's Crosstrek has built a reputation as a practical and economical car that also offers plenty of extras for a vehicle in its price range. With a refreshed version just around the corner, what are the main 2020 Subaru Crosstrek features to look out for?
New Plug-In Hybrid Option
Perhaps the biggest change for 2020 is that the Crosstrek will now be available in a hybrid configuration. Added to the standard gas engine models is a newly developed gas-electric powertrain option designed in association with Toyota, and this will be plug-in chargeable for full EV operation.
While the all-electric range will only be 25km or so, the major benefit will be greatly improved fuel economy when running in hybrid mode. Canadian figures are yet to be released but are expected to be in the region of 2.6 Le/100km.
Standard Engine
But the hybrid Crosstrek is only one model in the lineup. The standard gas-only trims are powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine producing 152hp. While this won't set any performance records, it's more than enough for a vehicle in the Crosstrek's subcompact crossover class, especially considering it's targeted mainly at the daily city driving niche.
Standard transmission is 6-speed manual, with a continuously variable transmission option available. And as usual with Subaru, full-time all-wheel drive with fully independent suspension is featured on all trim levels.
Standard gas fuel economy figures are likely to be unchanged from the 2019 Crosstrek, which boasts an impressive 10.5L / 100km for city driving and 8.1L / 100km on the highway.
In addition, gas-only versions of the 2020 Crosstrek will add an SI-Drive selector to choose between intelligent and sports modes, and an engine start-stop system for models which use the optional continuously variable transmission.
EyeSight Suite
Also new for 2020 is the inclusion of Subaru's EyeSight suite of driver assistance and safety features as standard across the Crosstrek lineup, rather than as an optional extra on higher trims. The suite includes:
- Front automatic emergency braking.
- Forward collision warnings.
- Collision detection with emergency assistance summoning.
- Lane keeping assistance.
- Lane departure and sway warnings.
- Adaptive cruise control.
As you move up the trim levels, extra features can be added, including blind-spot monitoring, rear emergency braking, cross-traffic warnings, automatic high beams and more.
Interior and Comfort
Aside from these notable changes, the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek features largely the same comprehensive range of interior features as the 2019 iteration. Seating four passengers comfortably, or five passengers a little less comfortably, it also has generous and flexible cargo space thanks to its flexible 60-40 seat folding configuration.
As far as infotainment is concerned, the Crosstrek offers a 6.5" touchscreen with user-friendly operation, along with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to allow system control from a smartphone.
Pricing
The 2020 Crosstrek is only marginally more expensive than the 2019 model, with the starting price just $100 higher at $23,795, representing great value considering the extra tech that's been added as standard.
