2020 Subaru Ascent Tech Performance and Price in Toronto

As a relatively recent newcomer to the SUV scene, the Subaru made quite an impact when it was launched in 2017. Aimed squarely at the family market, this three-row crossover boasted a unique combination of power, comfort, and affordability. With a new 2020 release now in Toronto dealer showrooms, does the latest Ascent model keep up the impressive standard?

Engine, Performance, and Fuel Economy

Every Ascent in the range is equipped with the same engine, a 2.4L turbo boxer providing a hefty 260 horsepower and 277lb-ft of torque. A SUV of this size needs a capable engine, and this mill doesn't disappoint.

With the horsepower passing through a smooth CVT to all-wheel drive, the end result is a smoothly performing car that always feels like it's got plenty in reserve. The Ascent is just as happy accelerating from a standing start as it is taking on highway passing, with the powertrain showing no complaints or reluctance.

But despite the generous power available, fuel consumption isn't high for a vehicle of this size, with typical figures of 11.2L / 100km in the city and 8.7L / 100km on the highway.

Subaru X-Mode

With this much power available, it's no surprise that the 2020 Ascent handles beautifully. However, the situation is improved even further by the inclusion of Subaru's X-Mode system, which automatically distributes torque to the four individual wheels to optimize traction in a wide variety of conditions.

Infotainment and Interior Tech

It has to be said that the 2020 Ascent isn't at the cutting edge of infotainment technology, with its relatively modest 6.5" touchscreen. However, the display is clear and bright, so there are no real complaints.

Device connectivity is provided by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the audio system is set up for satellite radio with an optional subscription.

Safety Features

Safety tech is a strong selling point of any family SUV, and the 2020 Ascent is very well equipped in this area. Subaru's Eyesight system provides a full range of driver assist technologies, and is standard across the range. Tech highlights include:

- Active collision detection and avoidance.

- Lane keeping assistance and departure warnings.

- Automatic alerts when the car stays stationary in moving traffic.

One particular safety feature will be welcome to all families with younger children. Active monitoring of the rear seats will alert the driver if the engine is turned off while a child is seated, offering a simple but useful reminder.

2020 Subaru Ascent Pricing in Toronto

The entry level Ascent is priced at a highly affordable $36,695, while the top-tier Premier trim has a manufacturer's starting price of just $50,995. Whichever model you choose, you'll get a lot of family SUV for your money.
